Our Beliefs
The Bible
The Bible is God's Word to all men. Because the Bible is inspired
by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. It is the supreme
source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. II Timothy 3:16;
II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105, 160, 12:6
God
There is one God, The Creator of the universe. He eternally
exists and has revealed Himself to man in the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:1,26,27,3:22; Deuteronomy 6:4; Psalm
90:2; Matthew 28:19 ; 1Peter 1:2
The Deity of Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was born of the Virgin Mary.
Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect
sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from
the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and
death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again to earth
to reign as King of King and Lord of Lord's. Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah
9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30 Hebrews 4:14-15; 1Corinthians 15:3
Man
Man was made in the spiritual image of God to be like Him in
character. He is the supreme object of God's creation. Although man
has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of
disobedience toward God called "sin". This attitude separates man
from God. Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23;
Isaiah 59:1-2
Salvation
Salvation is a gift from God to men. Man can never make up for
his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by turning from a
life of sin and trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of
forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins
the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. Romans
6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26;
Romans 5:1
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He
is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus
Christ. At salvation the Holy Spirit lives in every Christian. He
guides Christians into all spiritual truth and produces the fruit of
the Spirit in the Christian's life. The empowering of the Holy
Spirit, the promise of the Father, is available for every Christian.
II Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; Acts 1:8, 2:4; Ephesians 5:18;
Galatians 5:25
Healing
Because of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross humanity
can experience divine healing through power of God. Isaiah 53:5; I
Peter 2:24-25
Eternity
Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally
separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness
and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be
eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are
places of eternal existence.
John 3:16; I John 2:25,5:11-13; Romans 6:23
Two years after the founding of the Assemblies of God, members adopted 16 beliefs for the Fellowship. This list, known as the Statement of Fundamental Truths, remains virtually unchanged. Four of these beliefs are considered the major tenets of the Fellowship. They are:
1. Salvation Through Jesus Christ (John 3:3, 16, 17; Romans 10:13; Ephesians 2:8, 9)
Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward
the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing
of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man
becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life.
2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8; 2:4; 17, 18, 38, 39)
All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and
earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy
Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church.
With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the
bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry.
3. Divine Healing for the Sick (James 5:14-16)
Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from
sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of
all believers.
4. The Second Coming of Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:14-16; 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52)
The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints,
which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ
with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years.
